Since posting that I am recovering from heat damage and I did not big chop I have been getting constant emails and messages
HOW DID I DO IT AND SEE A DIFFERENCE IN SUCH A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME ?
Now trust me I am No Pro at all. All of these tips are nothing but my tips and tricks that helped & worked for me in recovering my hair from the heat damage over the years from heat.
1) Do Your Research
Doing research is one of the most important parts of recovering and knowing what your hair likes and doesn’t like. For example, I learned through my extensive trial and error progress that my hair loves & lives for certain products like coconut oil. And for others such as my brothers their hair does not love it like mine does. Everybody’s hair loves and hates different things. So doing your research is more so a trial and error process for you and your journey to healthy hair
2) Minimize use of Heating Tools
NO ONE ever said you had to complete cut off heat tools at once but minimizing heat is going to be crucial. for example, if you use heat on your hair every day of the week minimize it to maybe once a week and then try every other week and gradually you will realize that you do no need a flat iorn or curling wand at all. Using excessive heat is what is causing your hair to become weaker and dryer. Using excessive heat is also breaking the bonds of your hair follicles. You can also determine your hair if it has been heat damaged by just looking at your hair. Over time your hair will go from a tight coil to a loooooooooooose S wave hair.
3) Deep Condition / Treat your hair weekly
This tip is a very very very very very very very crucial tip. Deep Conditioning your hair helps bring moisture back into the hair shaft. It also helps repair the hair shaft from the damage it has endured. The Recommendation is that you deep condition your hair at least 1x a week. When deep conditioning your hair you should sit under a hooded dryer or use a deep conditioning cap so that your deep conditioner can penetrate the hair shaft to its highest ability. Also in addition to the deep conditioning your should do different treatments depending on what your hair is in need of during the month. The different types of treatments are Elasticity, Protein , Retention, ETC (WELL SAVE THE INDEPTH DECRIPTIONS OF EACH IN ANOTHER POST)
4) Protect Your Hair
Protecting your hair from is one of the toughest things you can do because sometimes the styles don’t work or they don’t come out the right way. The most common and most used way of protection is a full head sew-in or a wig . That way you don’t have to manipulate your hair as much as you would if you were to have your hair out. Another common way of protecting your hair is buns and corn rows. These are the lesser time protective styles. The more cute but time consuming is Full head box braids , Twist Outs, Fux Locs ,Perm Rods, Foam Rollers, Bantu Knots , & Braid Outs . These Styles are usually done at night and taken out in the morning depending on your drying time.
5) Oil your hair
GREASE IS NOT THE SAME AS OIL ! GREASE IS NOT THE SAME AS OIL ! I REPEAT GREASE IS NOT THE SAME AS OIL ! I say this because if you as somebody of the older generation they will constantly say ” All you need to do is grease your scalp it will be enough” NO ! PUT THE GREASE DOWN & MOVE AWAY SLOWLY ! Grease does nothing but clog up your pore & scalp causing your hair to be very weighed down and if its my head very itchy by day 2 after my wash day. Oiling your hair is going to push through your hair folic and penetrate the hair shaft oppose to grease just sitting on the scalp just gunking up and creating dandruff. So next time some one tells you all you need to do is “Grease Your Scalp” tell them this “GREASE IS NOT THE SAME AS OIL ! , I DO NOT WANT A GUNK OF GREASE TO CLOG MY PORES I WANT MY OIL TO PENETRATE MY SCALP”. This tip will ultimately change your way of life and your scalp & hair will thank you.
** NEVER APPLY OIL TO BONE DRY HAIR ALWAYS HAVE IF NOT DRENCED HAIR DAMP HAIR THE OIL WILL JUST SIT ON TOP OF HAIR IT WILL NOT DO NOTHING AT ALL*
6) Cleanse your Scalp
Cleaning your scalp is a major part in healthy hair. One of my best scalp cleaning remedies is using APPLE CIDER VINEGAR. Using a bottle filled with half ACV & half water will make you scalp feel so clean. Do this about 20-30 minutes you actually wash your hair. Let it actually work your scalp and your scalp will feel so clean with just that ACV mixture. Also when you are washing your hair on wash day I want you to try this tip, Wash at the roots and scalp of your head. Do not focus on the length of your hair because shampoo just dries the hair out instead wash your scalp & let the shampoo run down the length of your hair while you are rinsing the shampoo out.
7) Skip the sulfate
Sulfate – The sulfate or sulphate ion is a polyatomic anion with the empirical formula SO2− 4. Sulfate is the spelling recommended by IUPAC, but sulphate is used in British English. Salts, acid derivatives, and peroxides of sulfate are widely used in industry. Sulfates occur widely in everyday life. Sulfates are salts of sulfuric acid and many are prepared from that acid.
Sulfate = Acid
Acid + Hair = No Moisture
No Moisture + Hair = Dryness
Dryness + Hair = Breakage
Breakage + Hair = No Growth
No Growth + Hair = Helpless

8) Trim Your Ends
Triming your ends is one of the things that will keep the hair looking healthy. Now you do not need to trim your end every 2/3 weeks. My recommendation is either every season (Spring / Summer / Winter / Fall) or if you want to in between your long term protective style so maybe in between each sew in or a set of braids or box braids. But once those ends start to get split make sure you cut them because the longer you wait the more you will have to cut once you finally do decide to get that trim.
9) Moisturize Your Hair
Natural hair love moisture. Any way you can find moisture use it. whether it water oil (not grease) or just steam your hair love it and it will thank you for it. One way I LOVE to retain moisture is to do Pre – Poo Treatments. Pre – Poo Treatments are just taking all of the oils that you have around whether it is Coconut oil , Almond oil , Mint Oil , Olive oil, Jojoba oil mix it together & on damp hair put it on your hair either the night before or morning of wash day and let the oil just sit in your hair and penetrate the hair. Good Lord does this feel AMAZING. THANK YOU NATURAL HAIR GODS
****Do not do this on dry. ****
10) Patience ! Patience ! Patience !
Recovering your natural hair takes time and patience. Take this from someone who expects to see results on the first try. You will want to cut your hair off , rip it out , even go MIA because your hair just isn’t acting right. Trust me I know I know o struggle. There were times that missed events and opportunities to go & brand myself to become the woman I aspire to be, because my hair wasn’t coming out right. There were times when I was like fuck it let me just straighten my hair this one time , just to go to this event I can restart my journey all over. But NO I got up dusted my shoulders off say down in my chair , got my water bottle , got my oil and started to style my hair. I practiced everyday until I got it right and after months of no heat I started to see results. My curl pattern started to come back become way more visible and I couldn’t stop.
My advice to you
“DO NOT LET YOUR HAIR KEEP YOU DOWN BECAUSE ALL THE STRUGGLES AND MISHAPS ARE WORTH IT. YOU WILL SEE RESULTS. SO DO NOT GIVE UP JUST KEEP SWIMMING ! “
